ARTSTINKS™ CANDLES 101

All the tips, tricks, and burning questions you need to get the most out of your ARTSTINKS™ candle.
  • Note: our candles come pre-trimmed. Do not trim your wick before initial burn.

    1. Burn for 4+ hours on initial burn, until wax pool reaches the edge of the jar. (If wax pool doesn't melt fully to the edges after 4 hours, that's okay. It should get there on second burn.)
    2. Always plan to burn your candle for at least 2 hours with each session. This allows the wax to melt evenly and prevent even mild tunneling.
    3. Our wicks are self-trimming, which means they will shed little flakes of the wick into the wax pool. This is normal! Do not trim your wicks unless there's significant buildup (mushrooming) or the flame is unruly.
    4. Our candles are designed to burn evenly across the whole jar. If you experience tunneling (candle burning in a tunnel and leaving the edges unmelted), let us know! That's not right.
    5. Do not burn for more than 5-6 hours at a time, or you risk the melt pool becoming too hot/deep and potentially drowning the wick.
  • We want you to enjoy your ARTSTINKS™ candle safely. Always follow our Safety Tips for a safe, clean burn.

    1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
    2. Do not move the candle while burning.
    3. Keep candles away from drafts, pets, and children.
    4. Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface with nothing above the candle.
    5. Stop burning when ~½ inch of wax remains.
  • That's no good! We designed ARTSTINKS™ candles to have a perfect, even burn. But candlemaking is an imperfect science, and it's possible you've got a bad apple in an otherwise good bunch.

Your candle should burn evenly to the edge of the jar. Small slivers of unmelted wax on the edges are normal, and should melt on subsequent burns.

But if you're experiencing severe tunneling, you can...

    • Use a hair dryer to melt the ring of hard wax around the edge, which should allow your candle to melt evenly on its next burn.
    • Wrap aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving an opening at the top. The foil traps heat and melts the tunneled wax back down to level.

If the problem persists, please contact us and we'll be happy to help. We want you to love your ARTSTINKS™ candle!

Note: the most common cause of tunneling is not burning long enough on initial burn. Please burn candle for 4+ hours on initial burn to let wax melt evenly.

  • Wick size is very important to candles, and we chose our wicks carefully, after months of research and testing.

The two most common problems candlemakers face when choosing a wick are:

    • Underwicking: Using a wick that's too small for the candle, creating a weak flame and a smaller burn pool.
    • Overwicking: Using a wick that's too large for the candle, causing excessive mushrooming, unruly flames, and tons of soot/smoke.

ARTSTINKS™ deliberately errs on the side of very slight underwicking with our candles, as we've found that it provides the best and safest burn experience.

This may lead to small variance in burn performance, including very mild tunneling or a "floppy" wick during the last third of your candle's burn time.

It should not, however, cause the wick to extinguish early or drown in its own wax. If this occurs, please contact us and we will be happy to help!

  • We take our burn performance very seriously, and want every customer to love their ARTSTINKS™ candle.

If you're unhappy for any reason with the performance, or just have a tip on how it might be improved, please contact us.

We welcome all feedback, good or bad!

  • Our organic cotton wicks are self-trimming, which means they are designed to flake into the wax pool as the candle burns and prevent smoky, unruly flames.

This means your wax will start to show little flecks as you burn the candle down. It's completely natural and safe. But if you don't like the look of it, you can prevent it with...

Regular trimming. Before each burn, trim the very tip of the wick and dispose of the trimmings. Wicks should always remain at 1/4", or you risk a too-small flame and tunneling.

  • Yes. When ½ inch of wax remains in the bottom, put your candle in the freezer overnight. Use a butter knife to carefully pop out the frozen wax the next day, and clean with a paper towel.

Note: The wicks are stuck to the bottom of the jar with adhesive tabs, and may require a little elbow grease to pop out.
